Building a home gym in a small Indian flat

The average flat across India's top seven cities is about 1,540 sq ft, but in the Mumbai region it is roughly 849 sq ft. A typical spare bedroom is 10 × 10 ft — 9.3 m² — and a full-size treadmill takes around 0.9 m² of that before you leave room to get on and off it. Buy for the floor you have, not the gym you imagine.

Buy in this order

  1. A dense mat. Not optional in an apartment. It cuts the structure-borne vibration that reaches the flat below, which is what neighbours actually complain about.
  2. Adjustable dumbbells. The single biggest space saving in home training — one pair replaces up to ten fixed pairs in roughly the footprint of one.
  3. A folding bench. Stores upright against a wall; unlocks most of the useful pressing and rowing movements.
  4. Cardio, last. It is the largest, heaviest and hardest thing to move out at the end of a lease. Decide on it only after checking whether it fits.

Floor loading, honestly

IS 875 Part 2 designs bedroom and living-room slabs in India for 2.0 kN/m². A 90 kg treadmill with an 80 kg user spread over a 0.9 m² footprint works out around 1.85 kN/m² — within the design allowance as a static load.

But running is not a static load. Foot strike produces peaks several times body weight, and that is a dynamic input a simple calculation does not capture. Slabs carry safety factors and the load is transient, so this is not a reason to panic — it is a reason to use a mat, keep equipment near a load-bearing wall rather than mid-span, and ask your builder if you live in an older building. We report the figure; we do not certify your slab.

Noise and your neighbours

Two different problems. Airborne noise (the motor, the belt) is mostly contained by walls. Structure-borne vibration travels through the slab and is what the flat below hears. A mat helps the second far more than the first. Running early in the morning or late at night in a shared building is the fastest way to lose an argument you cannot win.

What actually fits 9.3 m²

Comfortably: a walking pad, adjustable dumbbells, a folding bench and a mat. Tightly: add a spin bike. Not really: a full-size treadmill plus anything else. Compare footprints on the fit checker, or browse small-space picks.
