Treadmill ceiling height in India: the fan is the limit
A treadmill raises you 12–25 cm off the floor, and running adds roughly 12 cm of vertical travel. So a 5 ft 10 in user needs about 2.02 m of clear space. India's building code guarantees 2.75 m in a habitable room, which sounds like plenty — until you notice the ceiling fan hanging around 2.45 m. That is the number that decides whether you can run at home.
Do the arithmetic once
Head height while running = your height + deck height + bounce. Take a 5 ft 10 in (178 cm) user on a mid-range treadmill:

Against a 2.75 m ceiling that leaves 60–73 cm — comfortable. Against fan blades at 2.45 m it leaves 30–43 cm. At 6 ft 2 in it drops to 20–33 cm, and at 6 ft 4 in to 15–28 cm — close enough that a hard stride becomes a real hazard.
Why nobody publishes the deck height
Manufacturers list motor power, belt size and maximum user weight. The running-deck height — how far the belt sits above your floor — is almost never given, even though it is the single figure that decides headroom. We compute across a 12–25 cm band and always report the worst case, which is why our verdicts are ranges.
Walking pads are the exception. They are flat slabs 9–12 cm tall, so the listed height is the deck height. That makes them the only cardio option that reliably clears a ceiling fan for a tall user. See the small-space picks.
What to do about the fan
- Switch it off while running. Obvious, unglamorous, works.
- Move the machine. Placing it away from directly under the fan usually solves the problem entirely — blades only extend 600 mm from centre on a standard 1200 mm sweep fan.
- Shorten the downrod. A flush or short-drop mount recovers 10–20 cm.
- Check for a false ceiling. These commonly remove 100–300 mm, and the fan comes down with them.
