Moving out with a home gym: what to buy if you rent

Indian flats are let on 11-month leave-and-licence agreements, so anything you buy should be costed for the trip back down, not just the room it goes into. The way out is the harder direction: equipment arrives as a flat carton and leaves assembled, and the 4-person lift common in older buildings is roughly a 1000 × 1250 mm car behind a 700 mm door — narrower than the 900 mm bedroom door it went through. Across the 69 machines in our dataset, nine of the fourteen walking pads list a width of 46–57 cm and clear that 700 mm door with 13–24 cm to spare, while the 20 treadmills run 109.5–174.5 cm long assembled and mostly need the 800–900 mm door of a 6-person lift or two people and a staircase. Plates, bands, mats and benches have no fit problem in either direction: they leave as parcels. Buy modular, keep the fastener bag, and measure your own landing and lift — these are listed figures, not a survey of your building.

The lease is the design constraint

The 11-month term is a legal convenience rather than a prediction, and plenty of tenancies renew twice. But it sets the planning horizon: assume at least one move inside the life of the equipment, and assume you are paying for it. A security deposit of two to six months' rent, depending on the city, is also sitting against the condition of the floor and the walls — which quietly rules out a chunk of the strength category. A wall-mounted rack or pull-up bar means anchors in masonry and a conversation with the owner; a doorway bar loads the architrave and marks the paint. Neither is a reason not to train, but both belong in the budget as making-good, not as fitness spend.

What the way out actually costs

  • The society, not the mover, sets the schedule. Many buildings restrict shifting to weekday daylight hours and hold a refundable deposit against lift damage. A machine that needs the lift needs the lift on someone else's calendar.
  • Stairs are priced per floor. Expect a treadmill to be quoted as a separate heavy item, and a carry above the second floor to be quoted again on top of that.
  • Delivery contracts and mover contracts both like the ground floor. The assumption that got the machine up is not guaranteed on the way down.
  • Resale is a collection problem before it is a price problem. A buyer for a used treadmill has to get it out of your building and into theirs, which is the same lift question twice. Modular kit sells because it can simply be handed over.

Modular beats monolithic

The useful split for a renter is not cheap versus expensive, it is whether the thing has a part count. Plates, rods and bands are units: 30 kg of iron leaves in six parcels and arrives without a technician, which is why we called strength the sane first purchase in the adjustable dumbbells guide. A walking pad is a single sealed object, but a small one — nine of the fourteen in our data are under 57 cm wide, and the seven that publish a deck height sit between 9.2 and 13.2 cm, so it stores against a wall or under a bed frame with real clearance. A full treadmill is a single object that is not small. A Smith-machine trainer at 230 × 182 cm with an 80 kg stack a side is a fixture: excellent equipment, and a bad fit for a lease that expires.

What our data can and cannot tell you

Of the 69 machines in our open dataset, only seven publish a running-deck height, so headroom verdicts elsewhere on this site are computed across a 12–25 cm band and reported at the worst case. The same honesty applies to your doorway. We hold listed dimensions, not the width of your landing, the turn outside your lift, or the actual carton the seller ships. Run the machine you are considering through the fit checker, read will it fit through your door and lift for the diagonal maths, and then measure the narrowest point on the route yourself. If the margin is under 5 cm, plan for the stairs in both directions.

A renter's buying order

  1. Bands and a mat first. They cost under ₹4,000 together and they move themselves.
  2. Plates and rods next, in units you can carry — not a single 70 kg set.
  3. A folding bench, checked folded rather than open.
  4. Cardio last, and only after the lift and landing are measured.
  5. Keep the fastener bag, the hex key and a photo of the assembly steps. Keep the carton only if you have a loft to put it in.
  6. Photograph the floor under the equipment on day one. A dense mat, ₹1,500–4,000, protects both the tile and the deposit — and the flat below, which we cover in the noise guide.
