Can your apartment floor take a treadmill?

Almost certainly yes, on the static numbers. IS 875 Part 2 designs an Indian residential room for a 2.0 kN/m² uniformly distributed live load — that is 2.0 kN on every square metre of the room, roughly 200 kg per m². A treadmill plus the person on it is about 130–190 kg in total, or 1.3–1.9 kN, standing on 0.51–2.25 m² depending on the machine — the range across the treadmills in our measurement table. The total is less than what a single square metre of that room is designed to carry. The real question in a flat is not whether the slab holds; it is vibration reaching the neighbour below, and that is a placement and matting problem, not a structural one.

What the code actually allows

IS 875 Part 2 sets live loads for buildings. Residential rooms are designed for 2.0 kN/m² spread uniformly, and the code pairs that with a concentrated-load check — of the order of 1.8 kN applied over a small contact area — precisely because real furniture never spreads itself evenly. Balconies and staircases are designed higher, at 3.0 kN/m². Slabs are then detailed with the safety factors of IS 456 on top. Those are design values for a compliant building, not a measurement of yours.

Why the smallest machine looks the worst

The compact treadmill tops 3 kN/m² and the largest one sits under 1 kN/m², which reads like the slim machine is dangerous. It is not, and the reason matters. A 2.0 kN/m² uniform load means the whole floor carrying that much at once. A 0.51 m² machine at 3.1 kN/m² is still only about 1.6 kN of actual load, arriving through four or six feet in a room whose other eight square metres are carrying a fraction of their allowance. Compared against the concentrated-load check rather than the uniform one, it passes with room to spare. Divide by a small area and any number looks alarming; the total is what the slab spans for.

Running is a dynamic load

Static arithmetic is the easy half. Foot strike while running peaks at roughly 2.5–3 times body weight, so an 80 kg runner delivers transient spikes of 2–2.4 kN through one foot, dozens of times a minute. Three things blunt it before it reaches the slab: the belt and deck absorb the strike, the machine's own mass damps what is left, and the load spreads through the frame to the feet. What survives is not enough to threaten a compliant RCC slab. It is easily enough to be heard downstairs, which is the complaint that actually arrives.

Placement, in order of what helps

  • Near a load-bearing wall or column, not mid-span. The centre of a slab deflects most and transmits vibration best. A metre closer to the wall costs you nothing.
  • On a dense rubber mat, not a foam one. Foam handles airborne noise; structure-borne vibration needs mass and stiffness. Budget ₹1,500–4,000 and treat it as part of the machine's price, not an accessory.
  • Along the short span of the room where you can tell which way the slab runs — usually parallel to the shorter wall.
  • Not on a cantilevered balcony or a loft. Balconies are designed for a different load case and lofts often for none at all.
  • At sane hours. Most society complaints are about 6 am and 11 pm, not about kilonewtons.

Where the arithmetic stops

Everything above assumes a building designed and built to code. We cannot see your slab, its age, its span, whether a previous owner cut into it, or whether your society's bylaws restrict heavy equipment — some do. Older stock, load-bearing masonry buildings and anything with a visible sag or existing cracks deserve a structural engineer's opinion rather than a table on a website. We report the figures; we do not certify your floor.
